Miley Cyrus Photos - inappropriate or artsy?

Vanity Fair had to shut down their website yesterday after receiving over 4 million hits because of Miley Cyrus's "risque" photos.

I would like to hear from some photographers what they thought about the photos. Were they artsy?

What do Bozeman families with 15 year olds think about the message this portrays? Over-rated as risque or totally inappropriate?

If that is artsy, a 15 year old has no business being around it.

She looks like a crack ho in that photo. I know it's harsh, but she really does look like she's whacked out.
Can't believe I looked bybozonative2 weeks ago (0 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
I googled the "racy" photos. Can't believe I fell for that! What the heck! She looks beautiful and innocent in those pictures--I am not a fan as the only attention I have paid to this was when my 12 year old asked me if I knew who Billy Ray Cyrus was and I laughed when she told me he was on television:-) This young girl is going to be judged for everything she does just like all the others before her--from Brook to Brittany--I just cannot believe how horrible the media is to these kids and am just glad I do not have to parent a child who will be judge through every step of puberty and beyond. Can you imagine? We have seen the break down the media created with Brittany--can't we just let these kids be?

Grossly inappropriate!!!
If I were BRC, I'd get after her management and threaten to drop them.
Who is exploiting whom? bygixa1 week ago (0 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
The sexualization of children is so rampant these days that many people don't even recognize it when they see it. Cyrus has apparently had second thoughts about the photos herself, issuing the following statement through her publicist, "I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be 'artistic' and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed. I never intended for any of this to happen and I apologize to my fans who I care so deeply about."
http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5gYLnT2kyPIgNUurQ71aNM3EJKpRAD90B1RA80

Of course, it's impossible to tell whether the statement was sincere or merely an attempt to 'damage control' the backlash from the parents of her mostly young and pre-teen fans.

Cyrus is the top earner for her age group and a multi-million dollar 'property' with the best management money can buy. MTV.com noted in a 24 April 2008 post, "According to the new issue of People magazine, the 'Hannah Montana' star — who recently was the subject of a racy-photo scandal — is on track to rack up $1 billion in 'Montana'-related sales during the 2007-08 fiscal year, putting her at the top of the heap of teen superstars earning adult-style wages."
http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1586201/20080424/cyrus__miley.jhtml

Her image is carefully and throroughly controlled. Both her manager and her parents were at that photo shoot. It was shot with a digital camera. Digital cameras are hooked up to a computer or lapbook on the set and everyone views the photos as they are shot. After the shoot, she or her management would have had photo approval, editorial approval, and probably saw preliminary page layouts. Miley Cyrus' publicists and parents approved the photos and the article before they realized they had made a miscalculation.

One thing is clear, she is a 15-year-old. It should be noted that Vanity Fair is an adult magazine and not intended for her young fans, so this was obviously calculated to give her cross-over appeal to the adult market.
Liebowitz byDrogoscg1 week ago (0 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
I have a deep respect for Annie Liebowitz' body of work, but i thought the photo looked forced and not really a great shot. The fact of the matter is that Cyrus is just not old enough to make that kind of shot to work. Shee looks more like a kid coming out of the shower than a starlet with sensuality to reveal.

I just want to know where this magazine was when Hayley Mills was 15.
Who is "Hayley Mills?" byberrymountain1 week ago (0 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Billy and his wife, apparently were so busy they left their 15 year old with a lesbian photographer, courtesy of Vanity Fair. Oh, I did read that Miley's "teacher" and "aunt" were both on site.

I think what is worse than the VF photograph, is the "photo shoot" with dad. He's a has been, no doubt very talented, but posing kind of sexualy with your daughter? Not appropriate and you have to wonder what kind of MAN would do this...

Years ago (about 20-25) there was a wet t-shirt contest out at Gallatin Gateway. A young girl about 16 was urged by her "proud father" to enter, and the father actually threw beer on his daughter's t-shirt. Everyone thought this was great. We were disgusted and left.

So, I've seen worse right here in the great "Gallatin Valley" aka "Mayberry."

Thank you for commenting on the post. Gixa....you are very right on with most everything.

Facts: Management: Miley's parents are both VERY involved with management. Disney is also very involved as well as her personal publicists. Overall, the parents do a great job and were actually at the shoot (obviously from the photo with BRC). Miley Cyrus is to be kept apart from Hannah Montana.

Vanity Fair is what interested me: Liebowitz is an excellent, respectable and amazing photographer. Vanity Fair is not Vogue, or Glamour, or any other typical fashion mag. It is an intellectual fashion/news mag for industry and those who truly understand the current events within the fashion/glamour industries. It is sometimes controversial, so if they were going for that...for pr, then VF is a perfect match. Very strategic.

The dad photo is seen as creepy, no doubt. Remember that as BRC is her dad, he doesn't look at her as sexy. He looks at her as his little girl that he adores for her amazing talents. With the two as a team, they have also revived his career. But without his support, she wouldn't be where she is.

As far as growing up - She is...she's at that point where people won't see her quite as an adult yet, but in show biz, she's leading an adult life...tricky spot for her to be in.

Her releasing the statement of the artsy photos? True, but also damage control.

PS: The Gallatin Gateway father/daughter wet t-shirt contest totally grosses me out!

remember brooke shields and those calvin klein jeans commercials in the '70s? and, miley's pics are far more tasteful than clothing worn by many of our 15 year olds at bozeman high. perhaps we're all a bit bothered by our cultural norms and simply project that angst onto situations like the vanity fair pictorial.
Miley's photos with dad tasteful byberrymountain6 days ago (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Nope.

Also, WARNING: Someone must have clicked the (report abuse) regarding my true feeling about the photo shoot with dad Billy and also Vanity Fair.

That's all. Apparently someone was NOT offended by the inappropriate photos of Miley half naked taken by a lesbian photographer. Nor are people offended by photographs taken of Miley and her dad Billy that appear more "boyfriend girlfriend."

I think the Chronicle should keep track of the bloggers/posters who (report this) and throw them off the blog for abusing our right to Freedom of Speech.

I saw your post before it was deleted and I have to agree on what you said. I have seen a couple of my posts get deleted too-but for no reason at all.

And I said crack ho on my response to this too LOL!

People-If you are offended, say something-don't be a wuss and click "report abuse" Now if someone is cussing up a storm and attacking other posters-then report it.
