My take is that he realized his mistake and reported it directly which, to me, implies a sense of both responsibility and remorse. By reporting it, an active hunter is now knowingly subjecting himself to public embarrassment and a suspension of his privilege for a few years. I think many of us have heard the phrase "shoot, shovel, and shut-up" enough to know that this may happen again this season without the hunter being man/woman enough to be accountable for their mistake. There is an online test that bear hunters are required to pass before a license will be issued. You have to look at twelve pictures and decide the species. It's tough. I did well enough to pass, but that was sitting here in my living room with a nice cup of coffee. I'm not trying to relieve him of his responsibility, but I feel like the "trigger-happy hunters" would have buried the thing and gone home. Oh yeah, you can test yourself, too! The only great need in killing a bear is it's hide...

...which mean's it's mainly a trophy hunt. The meat, unless ultra tenerized, is not that great. I hunt deer & speed-goats, which alway's make fine meals. I'd go for elk too, but my freezer is usually full enough. |

You do realize that he failed the ULTIMATE test!!!

| An online test certainly doesn't cover a situation out in the field. | |

| I realize that he screwed up big time, but I think the ultimate test was of his sportsmanship, reporting what he did. | ||

The bear shot was only 300 pounds according to the article. It would be very hard to know if it was a griz at 100 yards with obscuring brush. sounded to me like it was a failure in patience to verify target. If he loses his liscence to hunt game for three years because of the bear, he should become a New York cop because it is perfectly just to fire fifty shots at a black man in New york city before you verify if he is armed or not. |

Southward, you are so right. I had difficulty with that test too. It's not as easy as one thinks. Boze-There is a reason tags are given out for bear hunting. Not just for sport like some think-population control can be an issue with bears too. Also, my husband got a bear in Washington a couple years ago...we ate it and it was good meat. I think that depends on where you get the bear. Monkey-he may have failed the ultimate test, but he did the right thing and reported it. He could have just taken it home and not said anything...or buried it. It was an accident. Drog-any way to make things out to be a racial issue. What the heck dude? Give me a break. |

Let's go ahead and bash all those irresponsible, so and so idiot hunters. They sure are irresponsible for footing the bill for wildlife management and for being the main reason there are Grizzly bears in the lower 48 states at all. While we're judging here how about all those idiot drivers out there killing and maiming people with their cars. I won't even start on all those poor animals that end up being road-kill. |

...I proudly stitched a patch on my red and black buffalo plaid flannel hunting shirt, it stated - "Hunter's Pay for Conservation". I, still, believe that. And I so severely and strongly believe that, "if you have even the slightest inclination that what you about to shoot at isn't what you are after, you don't take the shot!" One has to be the highest judge of themself in the rhelm of any instance in hunting. |
