Round, round, get around, I get around, yeah.

Baseline Road, I think. North of town out Springhill.

A couple weeks ago there was a newspaper article about the worst intersections in town; those that get a D or F grade for their level of service. I waited for the "official thread" to appear, but it never did. So, I started to post my own, but then I thought to myself:

"Gosh, how terribly boring!"

Do we really need to be reminded every couple of years about the same intersections that we all know to avoid at certain times of day (or always)? Is it interesting to grouse about the city spending another x-thousand dollars to fund another study to confirm that, for example, upgrading 7th and Durston without adding left turn arrows didn't really change anything? Not really.

I would be more interested to hear how others avoid traffic nightmares in the area. If you have lived here even a few months you know which routes to avoid to get through your errands/commute/joyride without losing patience. So, without giving to much away, what tips or shortcuts can you offer?

Here's one to start off:

Downtown to Target: I take Rouse to Oak, jump across 7th to Baxter Lane, then take Simmental (turn right at Hilton Inn) to Cattail and across 19th. I completely avoid the stop-and-go hell of Main and North 19th, without any extra miles, and it is actually faster than going out to the freeway.

Now you go. Funny relevant stories also welcome!

Wal Mart to IGA byuptown4 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
I think they should give the parking lot in front of K Mart a name and put up a street sign. Because in going from Wal Mart to the IGA, it's become very much a favorite short cut. So it might as well be a street, and be made "legal".

Good call. Maybe then they could get some $ for asphalt work. While they are at it they should punch 15th through between Main and Babcock, since the old Parilla frontage road is already so popular.

i'm a fan of several "shortcuts of necessity":

1. eastbound on main -> 11th: hang a right through the parking lot of the old GOP-HQ and race by the coffee hut.

1. eastbound Durston ->7th: hang a right into the (ex-)Bozeman Furniture alley entrance. it's better in the winter though because the snow mounds up by the curb, so you actually can just pop out of lane anywhere and hop the curb into that lot, if you decide to bail on the light.

3. here's a good one i heard:IF you are the front car in the left turn lane at a red light - punch through the intersection just before your light turns green. watch the cross-traffic's signal and be very wary of danger. watch the peds, and if someones opposite you is antsy to make a right turn, or just to get off the line, you can't risk this one. have to watch out and anticipate other drivers. note: i've only heard of this move - i'd never do anything like this in order to shave 10 minutes off of a 12-minute commute.

the only real alternative is to go bike. buy a trailer so you can do your grocery shopping & laundry with your bike also. it'd be cool if the tax burden could be skewed to favor people who don't drive a car.
