Chronicle Crime

I have come to the conclusion, that the Chronicle is using the "silly" calls to lighten things up a bit. No doubt we have real crime here in Bozeman. Sadly, more than I ever thought possible. In my high school days, kids were out in the parking lots smoking pot. Everyone knew it, even the principal. (Don't jump to any concusions...) It was somewhat normal I suppose. I was one of those kids who kept my nose down, and stayed away from the driniking and pot smoking. So, I guess a Nerd. Ahh, but today it seems we have a massive drug problem in the entire state. How horribly sad. I for one was so pleased to see the article in the Chronicle (Tuesday?) regarding the Missouri Drug Task Force. They are doing a great job. I for one would be happy to have my property taxes raised to enlarge this force, and run these drug dealers out of Bozeman and the state. I'd also sure like to have seen a PORK EARMARK of 4 MILLION DOLLARS $$$$$ handed over to the Missouri Drug Task Force. In some counties in other states, the Sheriff's have put together a volunteer "Sheriff Posse." These posse's are trained, and assist law enforcement with no charge to the taxpayers. Do they have a "posse" here? |

Maybe you should consider doing a ride along with one of our finest. Then you could see for yourself that they do FAR more than the silly things you find humerous. These men and women put their lives in danger each time they get in their patrol cars(that hardly cost $80.000) and 3 officers have actually been in danger or hurt on the job while fighting crime. I agree with berrymountain-the DTF guys did an awesome job and should be commended. They work harder than most people I know and probably make less. Before you criticize our finest, maybe get the facts straight next time. |

Actually prdpowife I have done a ride along, and wasn't impressed. Let me tell you about it.... First I waited for 2 hours for the officer to show up. We then proceeded to drive to a location and sit for about 20 minutes until he handed out ticket. Then we went to smiths where a old lady backed into another car, lets see we then drove around aimlessly (I even asked if he had a set route) until we did another stop. This was all done in about a 3 1/2 to 4 hr period. Actually the point I was referring to was the new patrol cars with 4 cameras to help identify illegally parked cars...the system alone costs $65,000 not counting the cost of the car. http://www.helenair.com/articles/2008/04/06/state/109st_0804 The 3 officers injured while fighting crime was it pulled muscles, Charlie horses, a sprained ankle? 3 is that a historical figure or annual? Please be clear at the nature of the injury...However, I will give you this one point, I remember I did see one officer hurt himself. I was at the park and the cop tipped his bike over on himself going around a corner, I believe the park was the skate park. It made the front page of the chronicle if anyone remembers. Finally, maybe its time for you to start hanging around harder working people, lower paid class of people. So yeah, the facts stand that maybe, if the city really needs that new jail they cut a couple officers and save the money in a bank account and then come to the tax payers and say, hey this new jail is important to us, so important that we put aside $15 mill for it. We need you guys to come up with another $15mill. But instead they blow the money on more cops, and then ask us to cover the new $30 mill jail they want. How come we never read about the "real" police work in Bozeman? Cause there are less then 80 violent crimes a year in Bozeman, thats why the majority of them are assault, meaning bars fights. I think its time for you to get your facts right about Bozemans "finest" |

| Actually, I figured a little humor at the expense of the police would be received much better than just an all out verbal assault on them. Even though we could have done that too. | |

| See I might be just an old fuddy duddy....oh wait i'm not even 25 yet, but any way when I was young and we heard stuff out side we called for the neighbor and grabbed a rake or shovel and went to look, all the time yelling for someone to hit the porch lights. Or if a rat died in the garage we got a broom and dust pan and disposed of the sucker in the garbage bin. The senseless calling of the police is highly funny to me. | |

| Here's what my experience on this subject is, and it's about the same regarding Illinois, Wisconsin, and Utah. The last 15-20 years have seen dramatic increases in the size of police forces in smalltown, USA. Many dialouges with police officers, from officers in my extended family to a couple that had me pulled over to off duty cops and their family members, have repeatly told me the same thing. It's a massive revenue generator! All official words will ALWAYS say that this department does not have a quota for fines and arrests, but over 90% of those I've spoken with tell me that it's all about the money and that those quotas are very real, only softly defined. Not enough busts, you'll be canned or demoted. We should probably be prepared to be pulled over more in Bozeman, and be given citations much more frequently as well. Humans are the new cash crop don'tya know! :) | |

| Hey, don't be mad at me, it not like I went searching through the archives for the dumbest ones. No, these all came from one day, the same day I wrote them, it not just one day either, I could write a paper like this everyday of the week if I wanted...If the police didn't want me to make fun of their job then how about putting in the paper articles about how they have a real job? What they do, instead of putting the things that make them more resemble The Andy Griffith Show than a serious police force....We all know they are there not to protect the community, but generate income for the city... | |
