Ripped off!

So I gave the owner or the managers plenty of time to return my calls in which they have obviously chosen not to. Maybe this will get their attention. If not, at least the word will be out about their business practices.

First off, a little background on myself. I am not a bar hopper and am far from a regular drinker. I have frequented the Cat's Paw for the last few years since moving here, but usually have a beer or two and lunch since it's right up the road from where I work. They have great food and drinks for a reasonable price.

Friday night, myself, my husband and a couple friends decided to go out for a few drinks after the Hunting and Fishing Expo at the Fairgrounds. Since we were planning on sticking around for a couple hours, we decided to run a tab. My husband drank the $1.75 beer specials, my friends drank bottled beer and her husband also had a couple double rum and cokes. Myself, I drank 2 double rum and cokes and switched over to singles and had 4 of them.  When it was close for us to leave, I asked the waitress if she could let us know where our tab was sitting at. She brought me back a $120 tab. On this tab was 6 double rum and cokes at $8.50, 6 single rum and cokes at $4.50, 8 bottled beers at $3-something and 10 pints of their beer special, plus some food I ordered. So here are my points, which I pointed out to the manager (who I had to wait on because he was playing poker-NOT DEALING, PLAYING)-

No way, no how did my husband drink 10 pints when we ordered all our drinks at the same time.
$8.50 for a watered down double rum and coke? At the Cat's Paw?
We were there for 2 hours and racked up a $120 tab?

Now don't get me wrong, I am not a cheapskate and I am a very reasonable person, but this was not what our tab should have been at. We all had 6 drinks...a piece. No more, no less.

The manager agreed that the tab seemed a bit excessive and said he would remove 4 of the beer specials and 4 of the double rum and cokes-which I thought was reasonable. I also asked him why in the heck their doubles were so expensive. He told me that their doubles are actually triples. In which I said "so you pour more alcohol than people ask for?" No answer on that, but he said "we've got the cheapest drinks in Bozeman." Are you kidding me? I could drink at the airport for cheaper.

When the waitress returned with our new tab, there was only 10 bucks taken off. At this point, I decided not to argue, so I paid and left.

The next morning, I called to speak to Tom (the owner) or a manager. The waitress whom I spoke to wouldn't pass me to a manager. She was rude, unreasonable and patronizing. She kept calling me honey, she told me that I shouldn't drink if I don't know what I am paying for and that I should find another bar. I explained to her that I wasn't going to argue with her about my tab and that I'd appreciate a phone call from a manager or Tom. I left my number and was hung up on. This was Saturday morning. They have had plenty of time to return my call and have chosen not to...so guess what? It's now my duty as a citizen of this town to let people know NOT to run a bar tab at the Cat's Paw. They will screw you, they will treat you like crap, attempt to get you drunk to take advantage of you and they don't care about the good people that frequent their establishment.

As a business owner myself, I can't believe the treatment I have received there. It's a bar, I get it...but they messed up and should fix it.

EDITED TO ADD AN UPDATE:

This morning, the Bar Manager called me to clear things up. They admitted fault both with the excessive drinks (not the price, but the amount) and apologized profusely for the snotty waitress whom I talked to Saturday morning (I am under the impression they have had issues with her attitude before). They offered myself and my husband lunch and drinks in which I will take them up on their offer.

Thanks Ron. You have restored my faith in good customer service.

BUT, I will NEVER run a tab there again :-)

CG, I'll never patronize them again. I believe you and they should know that losing a few customers that usually spend $40-$50 (even $10) per visit is not worth the little they scammed off you, nor is it worth keeping a bar girl who is has no interest in their reputation.

I have always liked the place but there are other places in town.

If I owed it, I owed it. But I know I didn't. I really hated posting this. Seriously. I have always been treated well there until this last time. All it takes is one experience like this to lose good customers.

So what you are really saying cowgirl is, if you booze you lose.

Peace

A life without alcohol or
liquor is less complicated
and saves money, too.
RE: Another comment bydanie0065 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse)
First, liquor and alcohol are the same thing.

Life without a car, house, or children is also less complicated and saves money but people do it anyway like drinking.

CGM was a customer who was erroneously billed and the Cat's Paw neglected to make it right. Whether she was buying groceries or knocking back a few, she has a legitimate beef.

CGM - I think you should buy the old liquor store next door and open your own bar and give the Cat's Paw a run for their money.

CW, you are right...but like Danie said, it's not the point here :-)

Danie, I'm moving. We need to catch up. Stop by for a sip when you get a chance and I'll fill you in :-)

I'll try to stop by tomorrow (Wednesday).
The women all look better at closing time byArt5 months ago (2 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
I don't mean to get off topic, but you are not a cheap date. OK, you had 3 double rum and cokes which you were told were really triples. And then you had 4 single rum and cokes. So that's 10 shots in 2 hours? Do you think they may have thought your judgement may have become impaired and that the waitress took advantage of that? If so, good for you for showing them otherwise. Just thinking about drinking that much in 2 hours makes my head hurt, though. But then again I've let myself get out of practice.
RE: The women all look better at closing time byindependent5 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse)
You stole my thunder! I was going to say the same thing. Probably more like twelve shots since the Cat's Paw likes to pour em a little stiff. The OP claims that she's not a bar hopper or a regular drinker, but like you said, she drank a lot of booze in two hours. If she's not a regular drinker, then she was either so drunk that she wasn't aware of how much alcohol her friends were drinking (it's happened to the best of us) or she was so beligerant that the waitress was just getting even. Or the third option, which is the folks at the Cat's Paw were just greedy jerks. Wouldn't be the first time.

Art and Ind,

That thought did cross my mind, BUT like most people who don't drink, but maybe a couple times a month, I know my limits. I KNOW under no circumstances was I so under the influence that I wouldn't know what I drank. One thing about me is that I do count my drinks. Yes, it seems like a lot of alcohol, but I was far from drunk (or belligerent). I was actually good to the waitress (being in the service industry, I always am!) and manager that evening and didn't even argue with them. I've NEVER had a stiff drink there, so I am positive my drinks were well watered down otherwise. I only had 2 doubles and 4 singles IN A TALL GLASS mind you (because I honestly don't care for the taste of alcohol LOL).

Either way...my friends and I did NOT drink that much alcohol. Period. What I'd like them to do is prove we drank that much. Especially for my husband to drink 10 pints in 2 hours?!?!? Really?
Heart broken Broaster at the Kitten's foot byChicken Dena5 months ago (3 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Yeah, once this waitress told me and my friend who came there specifically to eat broasted chicken that the broaster was broken and they did not know if or when it would be fixed. Well, the very next weekend we went to eat some lunch and watch football we asked our waitress of the broaster's well-being and she looked at us like we were crazy because according to her, the broaster was never broken at all.
Lying jerk.
We have had a few times there and other places where they tip their thumb on the scale when it comes to pay up. That's why I always pay drink for drink whenever possible. And if not, line the glasses up then there's no mistaking-- no matter how many doubles you have.
CGM, I don't mind if you are a big drinker or not but that is a lot of booze in a short while. I don't doubt that it's possible for this to be some of the bar's wrong doing but that does sound like a fair amount of impairment fluid. S'all I'm sayin'.
RE: Heart broken Broaster at the Kitten's foot bycowgirlmedic5 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse)
OMG, I KNOW!!!! I've NEVER been able to have their "famous chicken" because they're out of it or "their broaster is broken." Heck, I have never even witnessed anyone eating it.

And as for the amount of what I drank...yes, I completely understand your and the other guys' comments. But I know's what I know's :-)
Yeah...it sux byalamator5 months ago (2 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
...for lack of a better word. We experienced the same thing on a dinner bill in Gateway. We got over it.

What I was wondering...6 drinks a piece...in 2 hours?

Who drove home?
RE: Yeah...it sux bycowgirlmedic5 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse)
We met up with my neighbor and rode home with her :-)

This cowgirl doesn't drink and drive...whether she drinks 6 drinks or 1. Seriously. I have a cousin who has been mentally retarded and paraplegic since she was 16 because of drinking and driving.

That is good to hear CGM. Glad you got it cleared up.

That's the best news of the day! (keep in mind I've been working on taxes today, so almost anything is better than that.)
RE: THE CAT'S PAW HAS REDEEMED THEMSELVES! bycowgirlmedic5 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
Well then I don't want to see you tomorrow if you are still working on your taxes. UNLESS you are getting a refund LOL
RE: THE CAT'S PAW HAS REDEEMED THEMSELVES! bydanie0065 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
We never get a refund...we always have to write a check.

Bummer! Last year was the first time in my life that I've paid taxes. I've always gotten a refund. Dang this renting and not having a big fat write-off!!! But that's okay now...I'm good to go with a mortgage now LOL

I was very disappointed when reading this discussion. I realize it was written before I was able to contact you about the issue, but I do want to clear up a few items with everybody else that has posted on this board.

First of all, I apologize for the bad experience you had with us last Friday night. It is certainly not our intention to rip off our customers, as several people have stated in this discussion. I realize that it is possible that your group did not have as many drinks as your tab stated, but you must realize that the waitress has nothing to gain by inflating your tab. It certainly had to have been an error on our part. I am also sorry if you felt that your drinks were watered down. That is not a complaint that we hear very often at the Cat’s Paw.

I was more than frustrated to see that this has escalated to postings on the Bozeman Chronicle discussion board about the Cat’s Paw having poor customer service. I noticed somebody complaining about an issue with the broasted chicken. We did have issues with the broaster for several days this last summer. Issues like this are somewhat out of our control, but customer service is something we can and will improve on. I apologize to everybody that has had a bad experience here. We will make every effort to improve.

The Cat's Meow! bywhatever.really5 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
So, I think most of you that have commented on this blown out of proportion post are saying what you're saying because you're sitting in front of a computer rather than discussing this face to face. It's very easy to rattle your mouth when no one is there to dispute what you have to say. My experiences at the Cat's Paw have been very respectful and enjoyable. The girls are great, and the service is extraoridinary. Do people make mistakes? YEP, we're all human! Despite the rude remarks above, I will continue to support the Cat's Paw AND run a tab!
