Well, I'm embarrassed.

I can't believe I got suckered into supporting that Tebow Super Bowl spot. I can certainly see now how some folks would find it objectionable and offensive,

Hmph missed that too byRightof Left6 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Ate dinner during the 1/2 time show and missed that and missed the Tebow commercial that had so many undies in a bunch. Go figure.

Maybe I will see if I can You-tube it.

(edited to ad) Well that was a let down, no fire and brimstone, just a mother talking about the importance of life. Tempest in a teacup.

Great game, some funny commercials, a boatload of other commercials in fact and now it is time for Hockey until June.
God is my quarterback byArt6 months ago (2 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Much was made of nothing as far as the commercial goes. The worst that I can say about it is that neither Tebow or the mom did really well in front of the camera. What I find to be in really poor taste is Tebow's listing Bible verses on the eye black on his face during games. Like God really cares about the Florida Gators or even football. The guy's got to have some incredible ego if he thinks he's gonna draw people to Christianity by writing on his face.

What did the verses say, Art?
I missed this one. byEd.6 months ago (2 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
NOW denounced it for glamorizing violence against women. Didn't get that out of it, but I guess they've got to find some excuse. Apparently NOW was OK w/ the Betty White commercial.
The real state of affairs bycwrite6 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
It didn't offend nearly as
much as the women used to sell
just about everything with their
nearly naked bodies. They are
like prostitutes who parade
themselves for money.

I really like cheerleaders.
RE: The real state of affairs bypopawheelie6 months ago (5 votes) (report abuse)
I also like cheerleaders AND prostitutes - especially with big knockers! More almost naked women, less almost naked men!
Near nakedness byArt6 months ago (3 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Say what you want about prostitutes but I happen to think they are very honest. It's very clear what they are selling. Unlike some nearly naked (but not nearly naked enough) women equating their nearly nakedness with a product they are trying to sell, like beer.
look... byXbzmblustar6 months ago (2 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
I don't care about how inoffensive the Tebow ad was--it's just that the SuperBowl had a record of of not accepting advocacy ads. If they air a pro-life ad, why not a pro-choice ad?

There is also the fact that abortion was completely illegal in the Phillipines at the time of Tim's mother's pregnancy which casts some doubts on the veracity of her story.

I'm also pretty disappointed with Tebow since the Heisman win. He seems to have let his limited celebrity go to his head while he's not living up to his earlier promise.
RE: look... byEd.6 months ago (3 votes) (report abuse)
Spoken like someone who has never seen the ad. Planned Parenthood had a rebuttal ad filmed, but couldn't raise the funding to run it, a good thing for PP since it had nothing to do w/ the Tebow spot. It appears that CBS knew what they were doing. It appears you don't.
Best use of money? byArt6 months ago (2 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
So how many people do you figure changed their minds about abortion as a result of this Super Bowl commercial? Probably about as many as have ever had their mind changed as the result of a BozemanTalk post. In other words, not many. How much did the ad cost? Probably enough to make a significant contribution to the Haiti releif effort. Which in my book would have been pro life.
The spot was NOT about abortion. byEd.6 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Abortion was NEVER mentioned in the spot. Only the pro-abortion tried to make it about abortion. Some of you bought into it lock, stock and barrel.

"How much did the ad cost? Probably enough to make a significant contribution to the Haiti releif effort." The same could be said for the $$$ spent on beer commercials, but apparently not by you.
Was too....was too! byArt6 months ago (3 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Ed: OK maybe it's not fair but I'm holding a faith based organization to a higher standard than a brewery. I think a faith based organization has a greater responsibility to humankind.
And as I recall you are right about the word abortion not being used.
In that sense I think it was a good ad because it didn't mention the word but made it's anti choice point.
RE: Was too....was too! byEd.6 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse)
"...made it's anti choice point." And how was that done? Even when the anti-life forces insisted that it was all about abortion, FOTF never brought it into the discussion.

As for your "higher standard", I doubt that. It appears to be little more than an excuse to 'find fault' with an organization that stands for good. If Haiti wasn't there, it would be Rwanda relief or Save the Whales.
Was too.. byXbzmblustar6 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Yes, it was.
Ed was right, I hadn't really watched the ad when I wrote the comment above. I was cooking during the Superbowl and based my opinion of the ad on the wee bit of attention that I paid to it and my dislike of Tebow. So I watched the ad. Nothing was explicitly pro-life or controversial.

Except it was an ad for an organization and that organization is anti-abortion, homophobic and fundamentalist Oh, they would also like for you to give them money to advance their views.

If MoveOn or DU ran an ad that praised the constitution but directed viewers to their website would that be o.k? After all, the ad does not specifically state that these are liberal sites and may contain leftist talking points.

I think the Superbowl should be free of politics and religion. We should all try to enjoy it like Leno, Letterman and Oprah. That was nice.
RE: Was too.. byEd.6 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse)
Interesting, Xb. No problem w/ your 'hypothetical'. The way you phrase it suggests that if we go to their website, we will find something contradictory to their ad. Rightly so.

It was and ad "by" FOTF, not "for" them. The message presented seemed to me to be: "If you agree w/ what you've just seen, come join us in our efforts to promote that message." Granted, as w/ any movement, there may be a solicitation of financial support, but I don't find that to be out of line.

Of the 3 charges you level against them, 2 are considered by many to be positives, even though you did not intend them so. The 3rd is a lie. To oppose homosexuality is not homophobic. The need to couch it as such demonstrates a fundamental failure to understand the issue.
WWJD? byArt6 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
So Ed. What would Jesus do? Give to the needy or pay for a Super Bowl commercial?
As to if the spot was about abortion. Like other abortion related posts, no ones going to change the others mind so maybe we can agree to disagree.
RE: WWJD? byEd.6 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse)
Interesting question, Art. You seem to want to assume the role of Judas...Jn. 12:4-5. I guess it's a dilemma as old as the NT...the answer seems to be "both". I find the WWJD guideline to be an outstanding one, but until you and I adopt it as the primary directive for determining our conduct, it's probably more than a little inappropriate to use it in an argument. W/i the context of this discussion, are you willing to apply it to the abortion issue? I will agree to disagree.
Bible verse byArt6 months ago (2 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Is that the part in the Bible where Judas gets on Christ's case about allowing Mary M. to have spent good money on expensive toileries to wash his feet, or something like that?
My take on that has alway been that the toileries were bought and that Christ didn't want to hurt Mary M's feelings by telling her she should have used the money for the poor instead. Had he gone shopping with Mary M he probably would have told her to not buy the oils or whatever it was.

Read it, and the next 3-4 vs. If you still get that out of it, we're probably wasting our time here.

If you need to keep it a secret, try the Internet. Just don't forget to delete the history.
Found the Bible byArt6 months ago (2 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
OK Ed, FYI. I just read that verse and that's still all I got out of it. I think Christ, because he was a nice guy didn't want to come off as not appreciating Mary M's gift which may not have been easy to do because he probably knew it was the last gift he was ever going to get, besides a crown of thorns. And after all, it was perfume. So I guess I'll see you on another post.

It seems to me to be a lot deeper than that, Art, but this is not a theology discussion, so it's probably better to move on. Glad you found your Bible.

You seem kind of pitiful with this comment, yb. There is a difference between comment and criticism, particularly since you never seem to want to post much at all. When you do, there is no substance to what you say. I guess it's just easier to lurk in the wings and feed off the opinions of others.

Puberty byArt6 months ago (2 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Wow, that brings back memories, Ed. I remember when I was younger I was sitting around enjoying a few beers, imagining what it was going to be like to hit puberty and wondering if it would happen by age 14.
RE: Puberty byEd.6 months ago (3 votes) (report abuse)
Kind of young to be enjoying a few beers, Art, although I remember riding w/ my uncle on his tractor and sneaking drinks of his when I was 6-7...not quite the same. Actually, I think I bypassed puberty altogether and went straight to adultery.
